Designing For Our Bodies

Artist Neil Harbisson was born completely color blind, but these days a device attached to his head turns color into audible frequencies. Instead of seeing a world in grayscale, Harbisson can hear a symphony of color — and yes, even listen to faces and paintings.  Neil Harbisson’s “eyeborg” allows him to hear colors, even those beyond the range of sight, such as ultraviolet and infrared frequencies.

His story is unbelievable; a remarkable use of modern technology.  This is just one example of a growing trend of technology integration with our biological “hardware”.  I want to talk about encouraging the innovation that will push the boundaries between technology and our world.  To do this, we have to start designing for our bodies, for our native ecosystems.  There is a lot of material in this post, so make sure you catch all of the exciting developments! Listen to Neil’s story, and get excited! Continue reading

What Does Healthy Behavior Cost?

I am really bad at being healthy. Exercise? Diet? Healthy lifestyle?  My motivation is always low. One of the talks at TEDxJNJ was about looking at why it is so hard to be healthy.  It’s not like we don’t know what’s good for us.  Implementing a lifestyle that we know is healthier than our current one always falls to the wayside. Is it because we lack the energy, or the time, to be healthy?  In the spirit of the new year, and new year’s resolutions, let’s talk about how to get over the procrastination hump and start living healthier, based on a talk from the TEDxJNJ Main Event on 12/12/12. Finding Your Lens, and Sticking To It

Chuck HobermanChuck Hoberman has made a career out of looking at the world with a different perspective.

Hoberman, internationally known for his “transformable structures”, seamlessly fuses the disciplines of art, architecture and engineering. Through his products, patents, and structures, Hoberman demonstrates how objects can be foldable, retractable, or shape-shifting.

He is the founder of Hoberman Associates, a multidisciplinary practice that utilizes transformable principles for a wide range of applications including consumer products, deployable shelters and structures for aerospace. His art has been exhibited around the world on many occasions over the last 20 years.  Examples of his commissioned work include the transforming video screen for the U2 360° world tour, the Hoberman Arch installed as the centerpiece for the Winter Olympic Games (2002), as well as exhibits at a number of major museums. Hoberman spoke at TEDxJNJ about his accomplishments in a calculated, almost too humble manner, but in the midst of explaining his way of viewing the world, he imparted on me some words of wisdom that really stuck with me. Thoughts on Modern Leadership

Leadership-wordle1-1024x791

What is Modern Leadership?

An entire section of TEDxJNJ’s 12/12/12 event was dedicated to leadership. We had speakers talk about their experiences growing as leaders. One was the leader of a large organization, one was a coworker and colleague of mine. Leadership occurs at all levels, yet “some people got it, some people don’t.” At least, that’s what it feels like, right? What is changing about leadership today? What’s working, and what’s not?

TEDxJNJ: Cyber Arms Race

TED on Tech and Terror

One of my favorite TED talks from the conference was on the advancing sophistication and technical capabilities of terrorist cells. Criminals and terrorist cells are using the advanced logistics technologies we built to dismantle the world we live in.  The same technology that enables mass dissemination of free information is also a massive increase of vulnerabilities to exploit. Watch Marc Goodman’s talk. I want to talk about the irony of terrorist organizations leveraging the same technologies we use to fight them for increased efficiency and deadly force. How do we fight this?

TEDxJNJ: The Future of Biogenetics and HealthCare

Biogenetics, DNA sequencing, personalized healthcare, what does it all mean?  We are standing on the cusp of the next plateau of medical knowledge, and it is all thanks to our growing understanding of our genetic code. Science has already identified multiple gene “markers” that are indications of a genetic susceptibility to certain diseases. As this wealth of knowledge grows, we grow closer to making science fiction a reality – delivering targeted treatments, preventative care, and most eerily, know what hereditary diseases you will contract in the future with an unprecedented level of accuracy. In doing so, one must consider the policies and the human psychology that are affected by such a profound shift in healthcare.

TEDxJNJ: Mindfulness at Work

UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM… I don’t know about where you work, but I didn’t think there are many places where you are going to see the Zen Master meditating on his desk before the staff meeting…  To kick off my TEDxJNJ experience, I went on an adventure to learn about this skill set called mindfulness, and how I could apply it to my life. 12/12/12 at TEDxJNJ!

MainEventCarouselDecember 12, 2012 was a unique moment in the passage of time that will not be repeated until 01/01/01, that is Jan 1, 2101. I may not live to see it, as I will be one month away from my 112th birthday, but who knows? I have high hopes for health care… I am so fortunate to have attended the TEDxJNJ Main Event to commemorate the milestone! I am energized with thoughts, and passion, and new ideas that will be the subject of several posts. I wanted to explain what role TEDxJNJ has in Johnson & Johnson, and in my own growing career. I believe it is a driver of critical conversations that all human beings should engage in.
