Thoughts on Modern Leadership

What is Modern Leadership?

An entire section of TEDxJNJ’s 12/12/12 event was dedicated to leadership. We had speakers talk about their experiences growing as leaders. One was the leader of a large organization, one was a coworker and colleague of mine. Leadership occurs at all levels, yet “some people got it, some people don’t.” At least, that’s what it feels like, right? What is changing about leadership today? What’s working, and what’s not?

TEDxJNJ: Cyber Arms Race

TED on Tech and Terror

One of my favorite TED talks from the conference was on the advancing sophistication and technical capabilities of terrorist cells. Criminals and terrorist cells are using the advanced logistics technologies we built to dismantle the world we live in.  The same technology that enables mass dissemination of free information is also a massive increase of vulnerabilities to exploit. Watch Marc Goodman’s talk. I want to talk about the irony of terrorist organizations leveraging the same technologies we use to fight them for increased efficiency and deadly force. How do we fight this?

TEDxJNJ: The Future of Biogenetics and HealthCare

Biogenetics, DNA sequencing, personalized healthcare, what does it all mean?  We are standing on the cusp of the next plateau of medical knowledge, and it is all thanks to our growing understanding of our genetic code. Science has already identified multiple gene “markers” that are indications of a genetic susceptibility to certain diseases. As this wealth of knowledge grows, we grow closer to making science fiction a reality – delivering targeted treatments, preventative care, and most eerily, know what hereditary diseases you will contract in the future with an unprecedented level of accuracy. In doing so, one must consider the policies and the human psychology that are affected by such a profound shift in healthcare.

TEDxJNJ: Mindfulness at Work

UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM… I don’t know about where you work, but I didn’t think there are many places where you are going to see the Zen Master meditating on his desk before the staff meeting…  To kick off my TEDxJNJ experience, I went on an adventure to learn about this skill set called mindfulness, and how I could apply it to my life. 12/12/12 at TEDxJNJ!

MainEventCarouselDecember 12, 2012 was a unique moment in the passage of time that will not be repeated until 01/01/01, that is Jan 1, 2101. I may not live to see it, as I will be one month away from my 112th birthday, but who knows? I have high hopes for health care… I am so fortunate to have attended the TEDxJNJ Main Event to commemorate the milestone! I am energized with thoughts, and passion, and new ideas that will be the subject of several posts. I wanted to explain what role TEDxJNJ has in Johnson & Johnson, and in my own growing career. I believe it is a driver of critical conversations that all human beings should engage in.

Transitioning

I am a few months away from completing my Leadership Development Program. At that point, I will continue in my current role as a manager of investigations to discover root cause of critical infrastructure incidents. When I started this journey 18 months ago, I was a different person. I was listening to Dubstep. I was spending my weekends going into New York to rid myself of my new found income at clubs and bars. I was fresh out of college, and chomping at the bit– I wanted to change the world. I still do. At this critical turning point, I look back over the last two years to see what’s changed and what has stayed the same. Continue reading
